In Memory of Fr. Francis & Janet Cameron (2013)
Today we reflect on the incredible lives of siblings Fr. Francis and Janet Cameron of Boisdale, Cape Breton. Born in Mabou, the family moved to North Sydney for employment before eventually settling in Boisdale. Fr. Francis and Janet were frequent performers at Celtic Colours, individually and as part of the Boisdale Trio. They were also significant contributors to the Cape Breton Fiddlers' Association.
Fr. Francis passed away earlier this year while his sister Janet passed away in 2020. With the Cape Breton Fiddlers' 50th anniversary festival taking place this weekend in St. Ann's at Colaisde na Gàidhlig, let’s take a look back at a visit we had with the pair in 2013.

Amazing track. Your voice, Tad, is full or expression and warmth; your guitar playing, solid, rhythmically sound with well-defined dynamics. I would recommend you to all my musical friends as a wonderful example of Celtic-specifically, Irish-traditional music. I hope that you won’t mind a tip. During the song, I was pining to see your eyes but they were closed all the way through. All the best Dave Kraft

As a fiddle player myself, of Irish, Scottish, country and Norwegian styles, I’ve met many classical violinists who claim to “know it all”, and think all fiddlers must be “loose” or without any “rhyme or reason” to what we do… well, obviously, that’s not the case. Furthermore, look at Annbjørg’s bowing here. It’s honestly some of the tightest, most perfectly sequenced bowing I’ve ever seen, and she is like that on every tune. The up and down bows flow seamlessly between phrases, and are perfectly directed going in and out of them. And that would be the “goal”, I suppose, for any musician. To have flawless technique. But this is not a formally taught or structured style. Granted, the “loose” part about fiddle music is that there often doesn’t exist sheet music for the tunes, so we learn most music by simply listening and repeating, like a language or storytelling, with an instrument. So that may sound unstructured to some, but… while variations are inevitable from player to player, it’s not like some some dissonant cacophony, with bizarre bowing patterns, when we’re playing. Annbjørg! Need i say more!

One might ask, given Paul Brady's stellar version of Mary and the Soldier on The Liberty Tapes album, who would record or perform a cover that could remotely compare. The answer is found here in this truly remarkable performance by Open the Door. Impeccable and heartfelt!

7:24 Having met Natalie MacMaster twice, and being completely starstruck, I find the child-like expression on her face to be so precious at this moment in the video. The music is so exciting no matter how long you’ve been doing it. Her very entrance onto the stage and excitement causes everyone else to start hootin, whoopin, and hollerin! 😆 Obviously, Beòlach and everyone on stage is passionate and grew up w the music, and loves what they do… I’m a huge fan. And Natalie is like this “big star”, yet no matter when or where, she always is “alive with it” on stage…as her grandmother once said! “I wasn’t rich enough to get a violin when I was young, but if I’d had the money, boy oh boy, I would’ve been a boilin’ player, my God, I just…I was just alive with it.” And at the end of the day the music is still the MUSIC and brings Natalie so much joy.
